Black Hills Vacation

Ok this is kind of an experiment. I’m trying out Windows Live, we’ll see how it works.

Here’s the rundown of our vacation. If you skip the commentary and just look at pictures I won’t be offended. Wed. we spent driving through Wyoming. There’s not much to see but we did stop at Martin’s Cove. We didn’t know it was there and just stopped really quick because we couldn’t get ahold of my parents who were driving somewhere behind us. I have a picture of Enoch pulling a handcart but it’s on my phone so I’ll have to post it separately. Thurs. we went to Mt. Rushmore. Just outside our hotel a stupid turkey tried to fly across the road and hit the windshield right in front of my face! We ended up with a nice crack that spread. We finally got there and the kids were freaking out because the parking lot was full of yellow jackets drawn by all the gory bug splattered cars. The monument was very cool and we enjoyed walking around the scenic loop. Then we went to the gift shop and that was it…a whole 1 1/2 hours. Exciting right. Luckily there was more fun to be had. John, Shilee, Enoch and Papa went on the Mt Rushmore cave tour and did the zipline while Granny, Aleah, Millie and I went shopping in Keystone. The kids, daddy, and Papa tried to go swimming in the afternoon but didn’t last too long because it was windy and bit chilly. That night we went to Crazy Horse Memorial. Very neat place! When it’s finished it will be more impressive than Mt. Rushmore. This is the only time we ran into crowds because they were doing there semi-annual night blast to celebrate the death of Crazy Horse and the birth of the sculptor both on Sept. 6th. We had to sit in the cold and drizzle to save our places but it was worth it. They did the laser show they do every night and then the night blast. Traffic was crazy getting out. Fri. we went to the Reptile Gardens outside Rapid City. This is what Millie was looking forward to and it didn’t disappoint. There were plenty of turtles. We also saw snake and alligator shows. We spent the afternoon in Deadwood where we went to a museum and saw the graves of Wild Bill and Calamity Jane. On the way back my dad got to see an old friend and say hello. We did some shopping and Aleah was able to see a train come into the station. She loved that! We ate at a café in Hill City that had delicious food! Sat. we packed up and left by about 7:15. My parents went south with Shilee and Millie and we went north with Enoch and Aleah to see Devils Tower.  Not 15 min. into the drive two deer ran across the road and it was impossible to miss the second one. It was so freaky and I’m glad the older girls weren’t with us. The other two were watching a movie and had no idea what happened. We weren’t able to stop right away so I don’t know what happened to the deer after it went flying down the hill on the other side. I was sick to my stomach for about 2 hrs. It kind of tainted seeing Devils Tower although it was really cool. We only stayed about 20 min, then got back on the road. We have front end damage and the light cover is busted but everything still worked. We’re just grateful it didn’t hit the windshield because it was already cracked and might have shattered. My parents stopped at Martins Cove and John drove a fast so we eventually caught up to them. We got home about 8:30 and Chewie was ecstatic to see us.  Overall it was a really fun trip and worth the drive.
